Circumstances of Destruction or Loss
The
drawing
is
one
of
around
4,000
works
from the
Kunsthalle
Bremen
that were
transferred
to
Schloss
Kernzow
north
of
Berlin
for
safekeeping
during
the
war
. In
1945
they were
discovered
by
Viktor
Baldin
, a
Moscow
museum
director
who
was
serving
in the
Russian
army
.
Baldin
took
several
of the
drawings
back
to
Moscow
and they
eventually
found
their
way
into the
collection
of the
Hermitage
.
It
is
unclear
whether
the
drawing
remains
in the
Hermitage
or
is
one
of the
1,500
works
that
remain
missing
.
