Notes
Notes
:
Talbot's
atmospheric
view
of
York
Minster
rising
above
Lop
Lane
dates
from the
mid-1840s
, the
crucial
decade
in
which
photography
rapidly
advanced
both
in
France
and
England
from its
earlier
experimental
origins
. As the
English
inventor
of
positive-negative
photography
and the
holder
of a
patent
on his
process
,
Talbot
sought
to
demonstrate
the
advantages
of his
medium
in a
variety
of
genres
,
including
architectural
and
landscape
views
,
portraiture
, and
still
life
.
When
Talbot
and his
collaborator
,
Calvin
Jones
,
visited
York
in
1845
, their
photographic
activities
aroused
much
interest
among
passers-by
who
were
unwitting
eyewitnesses
to a
revolution
in
art
and
science
