Troopers are taking led horses away from the battle front. Mr. Merle Johnson, 234 West 44th Street, recommended to me by Miss Capen, has a photograph of this picture and has given me this information. Note from Clark Art Institute files: subsequent scholarship indicates that fourth refers to the cavalry maneuver in which three men of every four dismounted to fight while the fourth led the three riderless horses to safety
