Scope and Contents of the Records

The collection is comprised of approximately 3300 tabbed orange cards printed with four columns identifying: call number, author/title, removed by, date. The cards document collection use and internal circulation from circa 1970 to the implementation of an electronic circulation system in 2010. Cards are inscribed with information concerning the item in use, minimal patron identification, and dates. Individual cards do not consistently identify any patron group, classifcation or date range.


Administrative history note

The Library of the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute was established in 1962. In 1973 the Library occupied the current facilities, comprising three floors of open stacks available to Institute staff and registered patrons with circulation limited to on-site study areas and offices.

Acquisition Information

Circulation cards were available to Library patrons and Institute staff up to the implementation of electronic circulation. In August 2010 the circulation cards were collected and boxed by Library interns. Cards were transferred to the Archive August 24, 2010.
